Overview of the Residency Program


Yearly schedule


The year is devided into 12 monthly blocks from July to June



PGY-2 year: 3 ward months, 5 consult months, 1 clinic month, 3 electives

PGY-3 year: 3 months pediatric neurology at Children’s National Medical Center CNMC, 2 months EMG/neurophysiology, 3 months neuropathology, 3 months consult service/specialty clinic, 1 clinic

PGY-4 year: 6 chief ward months, 6 electives


Electives during first year (PGY-2):

neuroradiology, neurosurgery, psychiatry


Possible elective choices during second and third years (PGY-3/4):

neuropathology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology, neuro-psychiatry/behavioral neurology, pain management, neuro-rehabilitation, neuro-genetics, bioethics, hospice care, ... or anything of your choice pending approval by the department.


Calls:

PGY-2: 6-7/month, rare max. 8

PGY-3: 3-6/month, average 4

PGY-4: 0-2/month


A typical day on the ward:

07:30-08:30 or 08:00 to 09:00 Morning Lecture or Morning Conference

Tuesdays 09:00-10:00 Neuropath

09:00-11:00 Work and Teaching Rounds

12:00-01:00 Noon Conference (Sleep, Neurophysiology)

01:00-04:30 Ward work

04:30 Sign out


Ambulatory care clinic:

Continuity clinic: 1 afternoon/week (3years)

Attending subspecialty clinic:

Neuromuscular, ALS, headache and pain, epilepsy, MS, movement disorders, myotoxin

Child neurology clinic: during second year (PGY-3) at CNMC


Research:

Residents are required to complete one or more research projects during the three years of training. Funds will be provided to present a project at a national meeting.

The proximity of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD allowed our residents also to persue projects at the NIH.


Vacation:

Each resident is allowed to take 3 weeks (1wk=7days) paid vacation during each year of training.
